Free Auto Repair Shop Software in Canada: What Is Real

“Free” covers very different things in auto repair shop software: a free plan with limits, a trial that turns into a bill, open-source code you run yourself, an app you build yourself, and the spreadsheet you already have. Each one is the right answer for some shops and an expensive mistake for others.

For the record: Garage is not free. It is a 7-day trial with no credit card, then $53 CAD/month. This guide shows when free is enough, and what to check when your shop is ready to pay for software.

Run your shop from your phone. Priced in Canadian dollars.

The short version

  • There are five kinds of “free”, and one of them, the trial, is not free software at all.
  • Free software still costs you time, data you may not be able to move, and support you don’t get.
  • Free is the right answer when you do a handful of jobs a month or cash is the constraint this month.
  • If you test a paid system, use the trial on real repair orders, not a demo car.

The five kinds of “free”

1. A permanent free plan

Software you can use indefinitely without paying, with limits on records, users, repair orders or features. It is the closest thing to real free shop software, as long as the limits fit your shop and the company keeps offering the plan.

2. A free trial

Full software for a set number of days, with or without a credit card. A trial is a test, not free software. It is still the best way to find out whether a paid system fits, if you use it on real work.

3. Open source

The code is free and you run it yourself, on your own computer or a server you rent. You own everything, and you also own the installation, the backups, the updates and the security.

4. An app you build yourself

A no-code app or a shared spreadsheet set up as a job tracker. It fits your shop exactly, and it is only as good as the hours you put into building it and keeping it working.

5. Paper and a spreadsheet

Carbon-copy repair orders and a spreadsheet for customers. Still how many shops run, and it works until you need to find last year’s brake job for a returning customer in under a minute.

What free shop software really costs a Canadian shop

  • Your time. Setting up, working around limits, and fixing things yourself when there is no support line.
  • Data you may not be able to move. If you can’t export customers, vehicles and history, switching later means starting over.
  • A setup built for another country. U.S. sales tax instead of GST/HST, PST or QST, with no way to set your own rates or mark non-taxable items.
  • Plans that change. A free tier can shrink or end, and your shop’s records are inside it.

When free is the right answer

Free is not a trap. Take it if:

  • You do a handful of jobs a month, and a capped free plan will hold everything you have.
  • Someone in the shop enjoys running a server, and open source will make them happier than anything you rent.
  • Cash is the constraint this month. Paper and a spreadsheet beat a subscription you can’t pay.

Come back when the shop has outgrown it: when finding a vehicle’s history takes longer than the job, or when more than one person needs to write repair orders.

Five questions before you rely on any tool

  1. Can I export my customers, vehicles and repair history, in a format another system can read?
  2. What exactly is the limit of the free plan, and what happens when I reach it?
  3. Can I set my province’s taxes (GST/HST, PST or QST), label each one correctly and mark non-taxable items?
  4. Can I write a repair order from my phone, at the car?
  5. Who answers when something breaks, and how fast?

What you get when you pay, and what Garage doesn’t have

  • Essential, $53 CAD/month: one user, up to 100 repair orders a month, estimates, unlimited customers, vehicles, parts and services, your province’s taxes already set up (add and edit as many taxes and fees as you need), repair orders and estimates you send by WhatsApp, iMessage or email, 6 GB of photos and email support.
  • Premium (see the current price): up to 7 users with role-based permissions, unlimited repair orders, the VIN scanner, inspection checklists and technical reports with photos, shop scheduling, inventory, point of sale, employee commissions, time and job clocks, secure data backup, 16 GB of photos, and live chat, text and email support.
  • What Garage doesn’t have: a free plan, published labour times or repair procedures, or an insurer estimating platform. A direct QuickBooks integration is in development; for now, export your reports as CSV.

Use a free trial the right way

Seven days is enough if you use them on real work. During the trial every feature is unlocked, including Premium, so note which ones you actually use before you pick a plan. Write three repair orders from your phone at the car, send one estimate to a customer by message, and print an invoice with your province’s taxes on it. Frequently asked questions

Is there truly free auto repair shop software?

Yes, in four forms: a permanent free tier with limits on records, users or features; open-source software you host and maintain yourself; a no-code app you build yourself; and paper or a spreadsheet. A free trial is not free software: it becomes a bill or ends.

Is Garage free?

No. Garage has a 7-day free trial with no credit card, then the Essential plan is $53 CAD/month, month to month. We say it up front because the rest of this guide is only useful if you know where we stand.

Is open-source shop software a good option?

It can be, if someone in the shop enjoys running a server: the code is free, but hosting, backups, updates and security are yours. For most shops the hours cost more than a subscription.

Does free software handle GST/HST?

Check before you rely on it. Some software in this category is built for U.S. sales tax; make sure you can set your own rates, label each one GST, HST, PST or QST, mark non-taxable items, and print a test invoice.

What should I check before I put my shop’s data in a free tool?

Whether you can export your customers, vehicles and repair history in a usable format, what the limits of the free plan are, and what happens to your data if the free plan changes or ends.
