Repair information and shop management are two different products. Labor guides, wiring diagrams and OEM procedures are one purchase; repair orders, estimates, invoices and scheduling are another. Most shops need both, and no cheap management system replaces a repair information subscription.

This gets confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive in both directions. Owners buy a management platform expecting wiring diagrams and get none. Other owners pay for ALLDATA and wonder why they are still writing invoices in Word. Both are reasonable mistakes, because both categories are sold as “software for your shop.”
Let’s start with the part that costs us money to say. Garage does not replace ALLDATA or Mitchell 1. We have no labor time guide, no estimating database, no wiring diagrams, no TSBs and no OEM procedures. If your quoting depends on published labor times, that is a data subscription you keep paying for regardless of what management system you use. Any vendor implying otherwise is hoping you do not open the product.
The short version
- Repair information = labor times, wiring diagrams, TSBs, OEM procedures, specifications. Sold by ALLDATA, Mitchell 1 and Motor. It tells you how to fix the car and how long it should take.
- Shop management = repair orders, estimates, invoices, scheduling, customer and vehicle history, parts inventory. It runs the business around the car.
- Neither category contains the other. They are different data, built by different companies, sold on different terms.
- Both vendors sell into both categories, which is where the confusion comes from. Mitchell 1 sells Manager SE alongside its repair information; ALLDATA sells Shop Manager alongside ALLDATA Repair.
- Watch the bundling: ALLDATA advertises Shop Manager at $99 a month, but it requires ALLDATA Repair at $209 underneath, so the real entry price is $308 (checked on ALLDATA’s published pricing in July 2026, confirm before you buy).
- A management system at $39 to $69 does not remove a $209 repair information line from your budget. Plan for both.
What repair information actually is
It is data about vehicles, produced by or licensed from manufacturers, and it is genuinely hard to assemble. That is why three companies dominate it and why it is not cheap.
A repair information subscription typically gives you:
- Labor times. The published hours for a given operation on a given vehicle. This is what most shops quote from.
- Wiring diagrams. Interactive, per-circuit, per-model-year.
- OEM repair procedures. The manufacturer’s actual sequence, torque specs, and cautions.
- Technical service bulletins and recalls.
- Component locations, specifications, fluid capacities, maintenance schedules.
- Diagnostic help, including known-fix databases in some products.
None of that is business software. It does not know your customer’s phone number and it does not print an invoice. It is a reference library that happens to live on a screen.
What shop management software actually is
It is the record of your business. Different data entirely, and mostly data you create rather than data you license.
- Repair orders and work orders, from first phone call to cash-out. The distinction between the two is covered in repair order vs work order.
- Estimates, and the approval trail that goes with them.
- Invoices, taxes, payments.
- Scheduling and bay assignment.
- Customer and vehicle history, so the same car showing up in eighteen months is not a blank page.
- Parts inventory and purchasing, in the products that carry it.
- Reporting: sales, technician output, profitability.
Nothing in that list tells you how to fix a Traverse. It tells you what you charged the last person who brought one in.
Why the two get confused
Three reasons, and all three are structural rather than anybody’s fault.
Both vendors sell both. Mitchell 1 is a repair information company that also sells Manager SE, a shop management system. ALLDATA is a repair information company that also sells Shop Manager. So “Mitchell 1” in a sentence could mean either product, and shop owners use the brand name to mean whichever one they bought.
Comparison content mixes them. Search “Mitchell 1 vs Tekmetric” and you get pages comparing a repair information company’s management module against a pure management platform, usually without saying that only half the products overlap. The comparison is valid for Manager SE against Tekmetric. It is meaningless for ALLDATA Repair against Tekmetric, because those two do not compete at all.
Estimating sits on the boundary. Building an estimate needs both: labor times from the information side, and pricing, customer and document handling from the management side. That is precisely why the expensive platforms integrate with repair information databases, and precisely why a $39 product cannot pretend to.
The pricing trap worth knowing about
ALLDATA advertises Shop Manager at $99 a month. Read the requirement underneath: it needs ALLDATA Repair at $209 a month to run. Real entry price, $308 a month.
That is not a scandal, it is a bundle, and if you need the repair data anyway it may be an entirely fair deal. But a $99 headline sitting next to $199 competitors reads as the cheap option, and it is not. This is the single most useful thing to know before you sit through that demo. Prices here were read on the vendors’ own published pages in July 2026 (ALLDATA); SaaS and subscription pricing moves, so confirm the current numbers yourself.
Mitchell 1 does not publish pricing for Manager SE at all. Phone and demo only. That is worth budgeting time for rather than money.
So what do you actually need?
Work through it in this order.
1. Do you quote from published labor times?
If yes, you need a repair information subscription. Full stop, regardless of what management system you pick. If you quote from experience and a notebook, which plenty of independent shops genuinely do, you may not.
2. Do you work on vehicles you cannot fix without diagrams and procedures?
Modern electrical work says yes for most shops. The Auto Care Association reported in April 2024 that 84 percent of independent shops named access to vehicle data as their top business issue, with 63 percent hitting the problem daily or weekly, and shops spending 2 to 4 hours per vehicle diagnosing before referring a job to a dealer, frequently unpaid. That is the cost of not having the data, and it dwarfs the subscription.
3. Do you need the business side?
If you are writing invoices by hand or in a spreadsheet, yes. That is a separate purchase and it is the cheaper of the two.
4. Do you want them connected?
This is where the money is. Platforms that pull labor times straight into the estimate save real counter time. They also start at $199 a month and up. If you are fine looking up the time in one window and typing it into another, you can run two cheaper products side by side. Plenty of shops do.
The honest version of where we sit

Do I need both ALLDATA and shop management software?
Most shops do. One tells you how to fix the vehicle and how long it should take; the other runs the estimate, the invoice, the schedule and the history. They hold different data and neither substitutes for the other.
Is Mitchell 1 the same as Mitchell 1 Manager SE?
No. Mitchell 1 sells repair information, and Manager SE is its separate shop management product. Comparison articles frequently blur the two. Manager SE competes with Tekmetric and similar platforms; the repair information product does not compete with them at all.
Can cheap shop software give me labor times?
No. Labor time databases are licensed data with real cost behind them, which is why they are sold as their own subscription. Any low-cost management product claiming to include them is worth checking carefully during a trial.
Bottom line
Two categories, two invoices. Repair information tells you how the car works. Shop management tells you how your business is doing. Buying one and expecting the other is the most common software mistake in this trade, and it is completely avoidable once you can see the line.
Price them separately, and be suspicious of any headline number that turns out to require a second subscription underneath it.
